In ancient Italy, the vicious and barbaric king of the Lombards (Jack Palance) desires to marry the daughter of another king in a neighboring region, but she's in love with another. Despite her wishes, her father arranges the marriage to the Lombard king, which he believes will benefit himself, but he is quickly murdered by the cruel barbarian. His daughter's true love, who was beaten and left for dead, recovers to lead a revolt and reclaim the princess by charging into a bloody, epic battle like no other in ancient times.

The term "peplum" (a Latin word referring to the Ancient Greek garment peplos), was introduced by French film critics in the 1960s.
